Thanks for the responses to my photo hosting test. It seems that a few of you had slight issues seeing both pictures. In those cases, it seemed related less than if it were a hosting issue and more like it might have been a function of the viewing style or LJ page structure. Make sure your pictures all carry the color profile of sRGB. Some browsers are profile-aware so if the profile is stripped or ignored when it's not sRGB the display will be noticeably different.

Hey handsome! How would I do that in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro? Somewhere in the JPG or PNG settings?

First do Edit - Convert to Profile and see what your profile currently is. If it's not sRGB then convert it.

Then when you save it you should see a checkbox for Embed Color Profile.

If you're already sRGB, though, then it won't make a difference.

I did notice that the flickr one looked slightly darker.
