Discussion: What makes Holmes Holmes?

Saw this interesting interview on PBS:  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/sherlock/producers.html

All of it's interesting, but you have to select "True to the original" in which Moffat briefly states why he thinks it is true to the original.  (also "Embracing Technology' applies)  Here is my very sloppy transcript of the lines I'm interested in:

First, you MUST see the show. (If you want to know the super illegal ways to secretly find them online...I know those ways. I do own the DVDs, though. :-) ).

Second, I completely agree about putting modern ideals back into stories, and I guess that is part of the reason I like the updating, because if it's done properly, the writers can figure out how to put those old ideals into a modern context.

As a sort of example of this, in Sherlock (did I mention that you should definitly watch it? :-P) there is the issue of two young men sharing a flat. Now I'm sure some people will disagree violently with me on this, but I actually appreciated the fact that in Sherlock there were one or two little jokes where people assume they're together, but more importantly in one (the most incredibly awkward ever) scene they explicitly hash it out and say they're not interested. Granted slash fangirls have a ball with that, but I actually think it's better than, for example the 2009 RDJ film (which I loved, don't get me wrong) where there was a distinctly modern feel to their relationship, but they're living together...and lots of people got the wrong idea. Obviously men still room together, but we live in a time where to preserve what I see as the intent of Doyle--just to show two guys who are friends and buddies--you have to explicitly deal with the idea of romantic attachment nowadays. You can't just go all Edwardian on the story.

Does that even make sense?
