The Kell Intervention

Captain James T Kirk was shivering on the damp stone floor of the prison cell where he had been incarcerated for the last two days. His face was twisted in pain as the wounds sustained in the ambush and subsequent torture made themselves known once more since he regained consciousness. Kirk felt something, no, someone lifting him up and pressing a cup to his lips.

“Spock?” whispered Kirk half-moaning, hoping his closest friend was near.

“Sorry no, Spock is not here. I am Kell. Your friends were also ambushed, they are not here, but I am convinced that they are held in this prison somewhere. Please drink, you need it, you have barely drunk anything since being captured,” said Kell almost pleadingly as she held the badly injured Kirk against her.

Kirk’s forced his tired eyes, which felt as heavy as lead, weights open to meet worried bright green ones. He began to drink the water but then gagged and choked on it after only a few sips.

“Easy now Captain, don’t drink it all at once!” protested Kell, placing her hand against Kirk’s forehead and chest as Kirk regained his breath.

“How do you know me?” asked Kirk, his sluggish thoughts temporarily cast aside.

Kell sighed. She had already been over this with the Captain a dozen times in the last two days as Kirk drifted in and out of consciousness. She hoped this would be the last time she would have to explain their present predicament to Kirk. Kell found Kirk to be a magnetic attraction. He was strong and fit, and from his delirious ramblings she learnt so much about Kirk’s passion for life. He reminded Kell of another whom she had met so long ago.

“You and your friends were ambushed quite suddenly by the locals that inhabit this planet, the local defence force, nasty lot too, very insular and they regard those not native to their planet to be hostile and I am sorry to say inferior to them. Certainly not a race my people would want to have future contact with for the foreseeable future; in a few hundred years, perhaps, if they become more mature by then. Anyway, they set upon you and when they saw your Vulcan friend, the one whom you call Spock, I could not stand by and watch them beat him to death, so I offered my services as it were and attempted to free you all. And it would have worked had it not been for the arrival of reinforcements. So I, along with you, was taken to this place where we have been ever since.” Kell shook her head in despair as she finished narrating a summary of the chain of events that brought them both here to a miserable hell hole of a prison.

“And now Captain we really must get out of this place, I think the service in this guest house is atrocious don’t you?” said Kell wryly, as she carefully placed Kirk down against an improvised pillow.

Kirk laughed at the playful words of this strange alien, before succumbing to the fit of coughing that usually accompanied broken ribs. Coughing over, Kirk observed Kell who was studying the heavy prison door. He could see Kell was tall, of athletic build, and had shoulder-length blond hair. She was wearing a deep green uniform, though it was half shredded, and Kirk observed where Kell had been roughly treated by their hosts. He found Kell compelling and felt himself wanting more. He was angered by what Kell had been subjected to. Just what was Kell doing anyway? thought Kirk as he saw Kell place her hands against the prison door. She seemed to be in deep concentration.

Kell was indeed in deep concentration. She had quite enough of this enforced imprisonment and was aware that Kirk needed medical treatment, far more than what she could provide here. She knew she could do more to help the human, but she also knew that it would be foolish trying to heal without having scanned the human first to get an understanding of the human body. There had not been time for that when she was surprised by the arrival of the landing party. The door, however, she could do something about. There would be no risk here. Kell focused on the door and mentally delved deep into the prison door down to the metal components. A heat radiated from Kell’s hands and from where he lay, Kirk was sure he saw a greenish hue emanate from her hands as well. A soft click penetrated the deafening silence.

Kell half-turned and smiled at Kirk knowingly. The door was now unlocked.

“Excuse me Captain, I need to complain about the appalling room service, I won’t be long,” said Kell, amused at the look of astonishment on Kirk’s face.

Kell stealthily stepped outside of their cell and saw a solitary guard at a table who was intent in studying some sort of card game. The game was rudely interrupted by Kell who landed a quick chop of the hand to the back of the guard’s neck. The guard fell forward, slumped over the table. Kell took the keys from the key rack above the guard and opened a nearby cabinet. It contained Kirk’s phaser and communicator. Kell also saw her instruments, scooped everything out of the cabinet, and carried them back to the cell to Kirk who was trying to raise himself up.

“Now Captain, do you mind not trying to injure yourself further, I told you I would only be a minute to lodge our complaint! Here are your things Captain, I thought you might want them,” said Kell playfully as she helped Kirk up and placed the full weight of Kirk next to her as she half dragged Kirk out of the cell.

Kirk used his free hand to try his communicator, there was a burst of static and then Uhura’s voice faintly came through. Kirk hoped Uhura would be able to hear him.

“This is Kirk, we have an emergency situation down here, I need you to locate Spock and McCoy who are being held against their will. And hurry!” said Kirk who was still absorbing the whirlwind of events that had just taken place. However, the fast paced whirl of events had taken its toll on Kirk whose frame went limp as soon as he closed his communicator.

Kell smiled, this Captain was truly a leader. The human’s concern for his friends was touching. She tightened her grip round Kirk's waist as she moved down the corridor and down the stairs in search of Kirk's friends. Only Kell knew it was also an almost sensual loving hold she had on Kirk as well. Half way down the stairs the communicator bleeped. Kell took the device and opened it. Uhura's voice chimed through.

"Captain our ship's sensors have located both Mr Spock and Dr Mccoy. They are on the floor below you, and Captain, the sensors indicate one of the life signs is very weak". Uhura's announcement held concern as she finished relaying this information.

Barbarians thought Kell as she had no doubt it was the Vulcan who was in trouble. She could heal the Vulcan, she had encountered them before many many years ago.

"Thank you, the Captain is currently unable to take your call but I would request you send down your security reinforcements to the level below,” Kell responded.

The response that followed Kell's request was almost unintelligible. Kell smiled grimly. She knew all too well how she would have felt had the positions been reversed.

"Please, I don't have time to argue, your Captain is seriously hurt and the situation is still far from over. Rest assured I am a friend, and right now, you need me. Just send those reinforcements and we can settle any other business later," replied Kell, closing the communicator before the bridge crew of the Enterprise could respond further.

Kell was now in the lower level; she arrived in time to see the golden shimmer of the requested personnel.

Their appearance provoked the nearby prison guards into firing on the Enterprise red shirts, who, in turn fought back. With the guards distracted, Kell slipped past the fighting men and checked the prison cells one by one until she found the two remaining members of the original landing party. Kell used the same method she employed earlier to unlock the cell door. Walking into the cell, she gently placed Kirk down. He groaned softly.

"What in blue blazes is going on?...JIM...oh God no..." came the southern worried drawl of Dr Leonard Mccoy.

Kell walked over to McCoy and unchained him from the wall. McCoy did not wait around. He quickly checked over the unconscious form of Spock who was still tied down to an improvised operating table. With tears in his eyes, McCoy tried to rouse Spock. A gentle hand laid on his shoulders.

"It's all right Doctor, I will take care of the Vulcan, your Captain needs your help in the meantime," said Kell softly but with a quiet ring of authority.

McCoy looked up and began to remonstrate, but Kell held up her hand as if to silence him. Reluctantly, McCoy staggered over to Kirk whose breathing had become more laboured since being set down on the floor and began to work on his injured Captain and friend.

Kell blocked out all that was going on around her and focused on the Vulcan whose life signs were fast fading. She placed her hands on Spock, inhaled deeply, radiated her energy into Spock and felt the flow travel from herself into Spock reaching the injured organs threatening the Vulcan’s life. Kell felt the healing waves weave their magic and Spock’s lifeforce responded in kind and became stronger. Through the bonding Kell felt a tendril of thought from Spock, it was insatiable curiosity.

You are of the Guardian Race. I have read of you. You visited my people before... Sarek! You linked with Sarek?!

Kell acknowledged Spock’s surprise that he quickly concealed even in the mind link and responded,

Yes, I did, and soon it will be time for me to leave you with your friends. You will be safe now.

Satisfied that Spock was out of danger, Kell withdrew. She staggered backwards and held her hand against her head--the intense mental energy used to heal Spock had left her drained. She felt strong hands support her and a kindly voice guided her outside of the cell and to a nearby chair.

Spock roused himself, got off the table, and joined his colleagues outside.

“Spock!” came the surprised cry of McCoy as he looked up to see him approaching.

“I am well, Doctor, is the Captain able to transport back to the ship?” asked Spock, turning to look at Kell who was still holding her head in her hands.

“Yes, Spock. We must get back to the Enterprise as soon as we can, Jim needs surgery to repair those broken ribs of his, and he has severe concussion amongst other injuries that I cannot tend to here,” replied McCoy.

Spock pulled out his communicator and gave the orders to beam himself, Dr McCoy, Captain Kirk, Kell and the entire landing party back to the Enterprise. It was illogical to spend another moment on this backwater planet that had done so much to hurt his friends and Kell. As the familiar tingle of the transporter engulfed him his final thought was of the image of Sarek he had been given by Kell. A comforting thought in what had been a long couple of days.

Part Two
Captain Kirk awoke to warmth and the familiar sound of chirps above him which assured one worried country doctor that all was well. He opened his eyes and saw Dr McCoy sitting in a chair next to him.

"Bones?...Spock! Is he all right, and there was someone else...Kell...." asked a groggy Kirk who was still rousing himself awake.

McCoy gripped his friend’s shoulders reassuringly.

"Easy Jim, Spock is fine and is on the bridge. He is acting double Vulcan since we came back from that godforsaken planet. I guess it is his way of being worried off his pointed ears about you. As to Kell, she is an interesting yet enigmatic woman. She has, however, asked to speak to you before taking leave of the Enterprise. She has to report back to her people, it seems."

Kirk smiled at McCoy’s description of Spock and knew that it was McCoy’s way of showing he was worried about Spock too. He resolved to speak with Spock later. Clearly something has rattled him and he refuses to discuss it, Kirk concluded.

"If you feel up to it, Kell is waiting now to speak to you. I have warned her that the visit must not last long as you need your rest," said Mccoy.

Kirk nodded his assent and immediately regretted it as he felt the room begin to sway. As he regained his equilibrium he saw Kell walk in, with an air of authority and attired in a fresh uniform with a dazzling green hue. Kell took up the seat vacated by McCoy, who had gone into the next room to give some privacy.

"Thank you for seeing me, Captain. I trust at you are feeling better?” asked Kell softly. Her voice had an almost feline quality which Kirk found irresistible.

"Thank you. Yes, I am fine," replied Kirk who dreamily wished he could take Kell to dine at a lovely intimate restaurant he had found on his last shore leave. The food had been excellent; he had thanked the chef for his masterful cooking, and the atmosphere romantic.

Kell smiled at Kirk almost knowingly, as if she could read Kirk’s thoughts that very moment.

“Captain I must take my leave of you all shortly, my people await me and I am already overdue. But I wanted to leave you with a gift, if you will allow me to link with you one final time.”

Kirk nodded his consent. Being Captain has its advantages. This is a cultural exchange and from what I can see their culture has a lot to offer! He struggled to contain his amusement as the meld began. Almost immediately he was thrust into a sea of shining stars, there were so many! As the starfield journey continued a shining emerald planet came into view. It was so beautiful and majestic as the ice rings embraced the planet on an eternal journey around the planet. Kirk had barely time to take in the full magnificence of this before the scene was replaced by a desert. The planet was hot and arid, the desert heat unforgiving. He heard a scream and looked round behind him. To his horror he saw a le-matya attack a young Vulcan and then the scene changed once more; he found himself in a cave away from the burning heat. He saw Kell and older Vulcan holding fingers in an intimate fashion. The Vulcan looked round, saw Kirk, raised his hand to give the traditional Vulcan greeting and then turned back to Kell. Kirk recognised the Vulcan immediately. He knew Spock would too. He was stunned. Was Kell THAT old? Only to be met with quivering mind laughter from Kell who simply replied in thought to Kirk, you should know better than to question a lady’s age! I am neither old nor young. I am passing through time. One day we shall meet again Kirk…Jim. I find you..fascinating!

And with that Kell left Kirk’s mind. Kirk felt exhaustion wash over him, and as he succumbed to the pull of sleep a relaxed smile of contentment and peace was on his face.

Kell withdrew and picked up her cloak she had left earlier on a chair whilst waiting for Kirk to come round. She took out a tablet and a note that was attached to it and left it on McCoy’s desk. It would be as invaluable as the Fabrini medical database. She smiled as she visualised the look of joy on McCoy’s face that would surely follow once the tablet and note was found.

Kell at her own request transported back down to the planet and back to her cloaked ship. She climbed into the spacious cockpit and took off from the planet. Only a bewildered shepherd saw the departure of Kell's ship, a tale he would share that evening with friends at the local watering hole. It had indeed been a very eventful day for the inhabitants of this land but soon, it would soon be forgotten. Many hundreds of years later, however, ancient scripts would be discovered describing the time when strangers arrived from the skies and a winged green chariot ascended into the heavens.

The winged green chariot caught up with the Enterprise which acknowledged the final farewell greeting from Kell. Spock himself had replied to Kell in the time-honoured Vulcan tradition. Kell smiled at the gift that she now wore around her neck from the Vulcan, the IDIC pendant. Surak would have been proud of Spock.

I will be back for you, James Kirk, thought Kell, this is not a final farewell, but a beginning. The Federation was an interesting diverse culture of worlds, still very primitive but the humans and Vulcans would eventually evolve into a higher form of existence as my own race had done.

Kell pressed a button on her control panel and her ship streaked into the Cosmos, disappearing in a dazzling display of green radiating shimmering light that dissipated into all the colours of a rainbow. The Enterprise, the Federation and Jim Kirk would never be alone in the Cosmos again. Kell would watch over them all until the End Of Time.
