Summary: With Reese still in prison, Finch enlists a few new helpers.
The small man with the glasses sat in a dim corner of the crowded bar. He didn’t look up as a tall, handsome man in a suit slid onto the stool next to him and ordered a glass of wine.
“You’re late, Mr. Caffrey,” the small man said quietly, still without turning.
“My apologies, Mr. Finch,” Neal Caffrey replied graciously. “Moz here is a little shy sometimes about meeting new people.” He jerked his head toward another small man in glasses, hovering nearby with a sour expression.
“Especially people who are in bed with the Feds,” this man grumbled.
Finch spared him a sideways glance. “I should have thought you’d be used to such associates by now, Mr. Haversham.”
Mozzie froze. Though it was hard to tell in the shadowy bar, he appeared to turn faintly green. “I’m . . . sorry?”
“Yes, Mr. Haversham, I know your name,” murmured Finch, sipping his own wine. “I also know that it is not your real name. I also know what your real name is, along with your date of birth, your Social Security number, where you keep your teddy bear, and why you moved away from-“
“Hold up,” Neal interrupted with a touch on Finch’s arm. “Mozzie’s no good to us if he faints.” He glanced anxiously at his colleague, whose green tint was rapidly turning to something between gray and purple.
“Very well.” Finch set his glass down. “I see that the rest of our party is here. Shall we go somewhere private and talk over our business?”
Neal glanced around. “Rest of our party? I don’t see-“ He broke off as Finch held out a hand and spoke, apparently to the air.
“My wallet, please, Miss Parker.”
A slender blonde woman appeared to materialize out of nowhere, a disgruntled look on her face. Reluctantly she handed over the wallet; Finch took it without looking at it.
“And its contents, please.”
A wad of cash, two credit cards, and a driver’s license were similarly handed over. Finch tucked them carefully away in the wallet, returned it to his coat pocket, and rose, stiffly.
“Shall we go?”
As he headed for the back exit, his three new associates exchanged glances before following him.
“He’s good,” Neal said, in a low, awed tone.
“Too good,” moaned Mozzie, as they fell into step behind their new leader.
