Diagon Alley at Christmas time was not the place for a faint-hearted witch or wizard. She made her way through the crowds, clutching parcels of varying sizes and shapes. She was certain that she could magic them all safely home but somehow that would have taken the joy out of Christmas shopping.

Not that there was much of that around at the moment - well, not in their home. It had been lost. Raw grief and an empty place at the table had seen to that this year. But you had to try. Life, as everyone kept telling her, had to go on.

“Good morning, Mrs Weasley! Nice to see you out and about. I was so sorry to hear about - .”

“Oh - good morning, er, Mr...” Her brain refused to conjure up the shop-keeper’s name so she just smiled sweetly and hurried on, losing herself in the crowd.

Hopefully he wouldn’t be offended; surely people would understand that so much had happened to her recently that she wasn’t her usual competent self. Or perhaps she never had been, she thought dismally. Perhaps she’d just been pretending all these years to be in control, in charge. ‘Or perhaps the rush of the wedding on top of the funeral was just the final straw,’ she muttered.

“Mrs Weasley! Mrs Weasley! You dropped your scarf.”

For a moment she couldn’t even think who the man was shouting at so loudly. Then she remembered and a trickle of that lost joy flooded through her! That was her name now! And Hermione turned to thank the stranger who had given her a Christmas present without price.
