The ghosts of Vanai visited Geder every night. No matter how hard he tried to forget them or explain how it really hadn’t been his fault after all or how he sometimes felt so sorry he had trouble breathing, they kept coming back. Night after night, he revisited the burning city. He sensed the heat radiating from the firm stone walls, separating him and his soldiers from the people hopelessly trapped in the flames. His mouth tasted of ash and smoke. Finally he would wake up, the relentlessly roaring fire and screams of thousands of people echoing in his ears.

The ghosts of Vanai visited Cithrin, too. They didn’t come to her as a simple nightly visitation, though. Most of the time she was fine - or so she told herself and anyone else who dared to ask. But sometimes, when she least expected it, she could still hear them. She would ponder about whether to buy a dress at a certain price when suddenly Magister Imaniel’s voice would tell her They started at such a low price, surely you can get more of a bargain. Then Cithrin would hold her breath until she was alone and allowed herself to cry.
