He had passed through their lives like a ghost, Darnay reflected. Always lingering at the edges, half in light and half in shadow, vanishing before one could turn to speak to him, only to reappear when one had nearly forgotten his existence. Always with something in his air that gave Darnay a faint feeling of unease, though the other spoke so little. Truly, his presence had been more like a haunting than a friendship.
How strange, then, that since his death, that presence among them should be more real and warm and strong than it had ever been in life.
