She'd been so busy trying to be quiet that she didn't remember that his other senses - like those involving hearing - were more finely tuned than ever. When he woke up, she couldn't resist the tender look she sent in his direction. At least he couldn't hear that.
The guilt was something she couldn't hide from her voice. "Hey," she said softly even as she pulled her tank top over her head. "I thought I'd get out of here early so I could go home, change... you know."
Auggie nodded his head. "Change. Right." Slowly, he pulled himself out of bed and wandered across his bedroom. In doing so, she got a good view of his ass. He smiled and padded over to his closet, pulling out a pair of sweats to wear.
"In theory, we have the day off today. You remember that, right?" Not like they actually had a day off. If he had one day where he wasn't called in, he'd die of shock. He sighed, not bothering with a shirt. "You can run off if you need to."
Oh, his senses were very clear sometimes. Sometimes his hearing was the best sense he had. "Want some coffee?" He really hoped it didn't get awkward.
Annie could hear his tone just as clearly as he could hear hers. She sighed, standing there in her panties and tank-top, she felt like the one-night stand about to do the worst kind of walk of shame.
"Auggie," she said, trying desperately to keep the regret out of her tone because she didn't actually feel any regret. She just didn't like the thought that he thought she was running off. "I remember. I just--"
Trailing off, she shifted from one foot to the other, then crossed the room, to slide her arms around his waist from the back. Pressing a soft kiss to the tattoo between his shoulder blades, she whispered, "It's complicated. You know that, right?"
"I know it is, Annie. We're a bit of a mess, aren't we?"
He smiled and rested his arms on top of hers. For a moment he just stood there, thinking over the night before. He wasn't sure what had come over either of them. All of a sudden, they were kissing and making confessions. They touched and did things that he didn't expect.
"I know, Annie. We're a bit alike, you and I. I'm fine with you running off." He laughed and turned to face her. He didn't regret anything that they had done. And he didn't hear it in her voice either.
He sighed, reaching out to brush her shoulder with his fingers. "I know. We work together. We're friends. Complicated."
She tilted her head to nuzzle at the hand that was touching her shoulder, the very same hand that had done amazing things to her the night before. Lifting her head, she brushed her temple along his and then pressed a kiss at his jaw.
"I don't either." This was new to him. It was something he hadn't planned on. Annie was the only woman he'd met who could even keep up with him sexually.
His head tilted and he leaned into her touch. A shiver ran through him and he slowly nodded his head. Leaning forward, he pressed a kiss to her cheek, letting it linger. He didn't want to lose her either.
"Breakfast." She nodded once, crisply and pulled her head back. Running her hands down his chest, fingers catching in the front of his pants, she said, "Breakfast is good. Lots of coffee."
They could figure out what they were going to do about all of what had happened - or was going to happen - after coffee. And breakfast.
"Lots of coffee. European dark roast. Nothing but the best in the Auggie household." He smiled and pulled back, giving her a quick peck on the cheek before turning from her. Slowly, he made his way out of his bedroom.
Thankfully, he had lived there long enough now that he knew it by heart now. That was the only rule he had in his apartment, never move anything. Padding out to the kitchen, he began to make a pot of coffee. Everything was calculated in advance. 32 steps from the bedroom to the kitchen. 5 steps from the door to the fridge. The coffee pot was always 8 steps to the right when the door was closed. He smiled as he puttered around, filling the basket and turning the machine on. It was installed into the water line so he didn't have to fill pot and worry about overflow.
"There's a diner down the street that makes very good pancakes. For a good tip, anyone will deliver to a blind guy." He smiled and motioned to the menu on the counter. "Just let me know what you want."
"You should really do some kind of shopping for when you have overnight guests," she chided him teasingly as she looked through his mostly empty fridge. "I'm no Danielle, but I could have whipped up something to save us from ordering out."
She reached for the menu and her stomach growled. Laughing a little, she scanned the paper quickly. "Maybe pancakes and bacon? Breakfast isn't complete without bacon."
Setting the menu back down, she picked up his phone.
"I didn't plan to have you here, or I would have." He laughed and got two mugs out of the cupboard. "I am sure you are a goddess in the kitchen. Meanwhile, I am not a cooking god, so, not a lot of food. Plus, I've been a bit busy with work and had no time to shop." Making a cup just as she liked it, he handed the mug to her.
He then made himself a cup. "I promise to have a well stocked fridge next time." He leaned against the counter, looking in the direction of her voice. That was if there was a next time.
"Make it two." He sipped his coffee, thinking it over. Did he want a second time? Did she?
"Next time?" She was cut off by someone answering on the other end of the line. Annie ordered breakfast for the two of them, giving her credit card information over the phone. She didn't need to go into her purse to do it, having memorized the numbers the day the card had been given to her.
Once it was all taken care of, she took the coffee cup from Auggie with a grin. "Thank you, you're my hero."
"What kind of man would I be if I didn't have coffee at the ready for the lady in waiting." He chuckled and moved over to stand beside her, leaning against the counter. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "This is too early," he teased her.
He took a sip of his coffee, using it as a delaying tactic while he thought. He didn't even know where to begin. "How long," he asked. "Should I put on a shirt?"
The advantage to being a sighted person in the presence of a blind man, especially one with Auggie's physique, was that she had the ability to look him over without his knowing about it. She could actually stare openly without anyone to judge her.
"You can," she said nonchalantly. "If they send a woman to deliver the food, I'd hate for her to think the sight of you without a shirt was her tip."
"No, it's just an added bonus." He sipped his coffee and raised an eyebrow at her. Oh, she may think she was stealthy, but he could hear amusement in her voice.
There was a reason he didn't put a shirt on.
"What can be done in thirty minutes..." He winked at her.
"In that case, maybe you should leave it off. Just in case."
She absolutely was amused, mostly by the way his complete lack of modesty shone through in his comments. Of course, when he asked what they could do in thirty minutes she snorted. "That just wasn't subtle at all."
It didn't stop her from reaching out and tucking her fingertips into the top of his pajama pants, though.
"I think that is the better option. It's just fair that to everyone that way." He chuckled and took another sip of his coffee. There were times like this that he wished that he could see. He wished he could see what was going on in her eyes. He could hear, but that wasn't always the same.
His lips turned up in a grin as he laughed. "No, I don't do subtle." Reaching over, he placed the mug down on the counter.
One hand moved down to her hips, pulling her close. "Think we should wait," he purred into her ear.

It sounded lame, even to her ears.
