Bluff......PRIDE

Today in football practice we were running middle drill. Now, this is usually a period that I take off and let the younger guys get some reps, because basically, I need some rest. But suddenly today, Coach Bobo said "Hey Will, come run fullback on this play." Seeing as how we don't run a fullback in our offense here, I wasn't surprised to see he was holding up a card for the offensive personnel to view the upcoming play. Before I could realize what the play was, Jordan Chambliss, former QB at Calallen, and the QB in on this particular play joked to me "Will, it's the old Flour Bluff special." At this point I realized the card was drawn up just like good old 34 Veer, and I turned back around to Jordan and said "You know, you're just about right."

My legs must have known my heart was excited because I took the handoff to the right and exploded between the tackle and end. As the middle and outside linebackers converged on me, I gave them both a good pop and sent them tripping backwards. Seeing that wide open field ahead of me, for a second I swore I saw a bright light - a mental image of green field converging to night sky at Hornet Stadium.

With one blink, I realized I was back at the height of my current football glory - the A&M practice field, and as such, I jogged back towards the huddle and handed the ball back to the ball boy.

I never thought I would run another play like that, and I understood, as much as ever, that maybe this was worth it after all.
