“Did you see what that psycho, Mary Cherry, was wearing today? I mean it’s like eighty degrees outside, and she’s wearing rabbit,” Lily Esposito ranted as she and her best friend Sam McPherson made their way down the hall to chemistry class.

“I have to say, Lil, nothing that she does surprises me anymore. Trying to figure out how she thinks is like trying to understand why people think David Letterman is funny. It just can’t be done,” Sam replied.

“Still I think she should be arrested and put into solitary confinement. No one should have to be subjected to that fur freak.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that. Satan has done some pretty heinous things to the fair population of Kennedy. Locking them up together would be the ultimate punishment.”

“Why Samson, that’s almost too sinister for words,” Lily said with a devious smile.

The two were so engrossed in their conversation they nearly collided with Brooke McQueen and Nicole Julian.

“I realize that the very stench of unpopularity and desperation causes eyes to tear, but do you think you two future gas station attendants could watch where you’re going? This is the new Calvin and if one you so much as brushes against it, I’m going to have to burn it,” Nicole said.

“You know what I realized, Satan? While you may think that you and those implants rule the halls, you don’t,” Sam countered, folding her arms across her chest and planting her tongue in the side of her cheek.

“Oh, I don’t know about that, Spam. I know about a hundred people that would tell you otherwise. Come on Brookie, let’s get in the class before I’m seen talking to these never-willbes.” Brooke followed behind the shorter blonde without saying a word.

“You know what, not even an eternity spent locked away with Mary Cherry would restore Nicole’s humanity,” Lily said as she and Sam followed the blondes into the classroom.

Sam walked over to her seat warily. Brooke seemed to be in a bad mood earlier and the last thing she wanted to do was deal with an irritated Brooke. She sat down and turned away from the blonde, ignoring Brooke.

“Okay listen up Generation X-tremely annoying. It has come to my attention that most of you lack the neurons to truly grasp the concepts of basic chemistry. So I’ve decided that I will break it down into the simplest terms and hopefully your MTV warped minds will be able to absorb it,” Bio Glass said as she stood in front of the class. There was a chorus of groans from the students as she turned around and wrote the word ‘atom’ on the board. “Don’t just sit there, people. Chop! Chop! Get out some paper and a pencil, and get to work!”

Sam flipped open her notebook and began to copy the things written on the board. The constant writing and drone of the teacher’s voice surrounded Sam like a fog. She was completely unaware of anything going on around her until a folded piece of paper appeared before her. She looked over at the blonde next to her. Brooke was still absorbed in writing. Glancing up to make sure the teacher was looking away, she quickly unfolded the paper and read it.

Sorry about Nicole. I don’t know why she’s like that.

-Brooke

Sam glanced over at the blonde again. This time Brooke was looking back at her and offered her a small smile and a shrug.

Sam wrote back…

It’s okay. I’m used to it.

-Sam

…and slid it back over to the blonde.

Brooke opened the note and read it. She shook her head slightly before scribbling something and sliding the paper back to the brunette.

It doesn’t make it right. Don’t argue with me. Just accept my apology.

Sam hide the smile that immediately sprang to her lips. With a dramatic sigh she wrote back…

Fine, I accept.

Brooke read the message and nodded her head.

Could this class get anymore boring?

I know. I can feel my brain beginning to turn to mush.

Wait you mean it wasn’t already mush?

Oh hahaha, Blondie, but I don’t see you discovering theories of relativity.

Ooo, touché…I’m sorry, but you walked right into that one.

Maybe I did, but you didn’t have to take it.

Brooke looked over at the brunette and saw the infamous ‘Sammy pout.’ She smiled at the girl before scribbling another message.

You’re right. I’m sorry. I just think you’re cute when you pout.

Sam arched an eyebrow at that comment.

Oh yeah? What else do you think is cute?

Well I think you’re cute when dance around with Mac when you think no one is looking. I think you’re really cute when you wake up in the morning and you’re hair’s all a mess from sleeping. It looks like you’ve been fighting a war with your pillow and it won. I think you’re beautiful when you smile. And I think you’re down right sexy when you wear that red shirt.

Sam looked down at the shirt she was wearing. She’d never been sure what had drawn her to the red shirt, but she was glad she’d bought it. Blushing, she looked up to make sure the teacher was still engrossed in what she was saying.

Well you know I aim to please. I think I’ll wear it more often, since now I know it’s your favorite.

I think you look sexy in everything you wear.

Oh really? Good to know. There’s like a minute left in this class. What do you say you and I continue this conversation behind the bleachers and skip lunch?

I don’t know that I can get away. I think Nic’s starting to get suspicious.

They both glanced back at the shorter blonde. Nicole was gesturing wildly to Mary Cherry.

Come on. I can make it worth your while.

I don’t know Sam…

Don’t make me use the pout.

Okay, okay, just give me five minutes to ditch those two and then I’ll meet you behind the bleachers. I’m going to hold you to that making it worth my time comment.

I’m counting on it.

The bell rang, and Sam slipped the paper into her bag quickly. She turned back to find Nicole and Mary Cherry standing there waiting for Brooke.

“Geez Spam, would you like an autographed picture?”

“That would be great, Satan. We can put it in the attic to scare away the mice,” Sam countered. She saw Brooke smirk briefly before she hid it and stood facing the shorter blonde.

“Come on, Nic. She’s not even worth it,” Brooke said, rushing the other two cheerleaders out of the door. She discreetly held up her hand, reminding Sam to give her five minutes.

Sam smiled, gathering her things. After a brief stop at her locker, she headed to the football field to wait for her girlfriend.

The end…
