Feb. 19, 2006 - Kate Walsh plays Dr. Addison Shepherd, the woman who steals Patrick Dempsey's heart on "Grey's Anatomy." She spoke to NEWSWEEK's Ramin Setoodeh. Excerpts:
NEWSWEEK: Should I call you Dr. Shepherd?
Kate Walsh: Sure. I insist. Everybody calls me Dr. Shepherd.
Do they really?
No.
You know, my mom believes you're really a doctor.
It's probably because I have a bossy personality. I'm a little bit of a control freak. You put on the white coat and you sound like you know what you're talking about.
I have to confess. I didn't like your character when she was introduced on "Grey's Anatomy."
You probably weren't alone. The writers had thought they wanted somebody to come in for five episodes. I fulfilled them and they called me and said, "Do you want to come back?" We kept it super top secret because we didn't want viewers to know. We still don't know what's going to happen.
So does that mean Derek and Meredith are going to get back together?
I have a job for a while, unless they push me down an elevator shaft.
Well, Addison and Derek aren't so bad together, either.
I think so, but I can't be objective.
As a viewer who are you rooting for?
I don't know.
Hmm. I think you have to root for yourself.
Yeah, alright. I'm rooting for me. But maybe it's not the right thing. Maybe I'm supposed to have a really sweet practice at Seattle Grace and hook up with some hot young intern.
Or maybe Meredith can join the relationship.
No. Although, Patrick [Dempsey] jokes about that.
Why haven't the two of you had a good love scene yet?
We did have a brief one, after the shower scene, it was supposed to be post-coital. We've had scenes we shot that they thought had too much chemistry. They want to keep the audience rooting for Meredith. But maybe you should write in and say, "That's what the people want!"
