Movies!

Well Kat is coming back tomorrow. I’m glad she got to help out and cheer her folks up but I’m also very glad to have her coming back home. Hooray me!

Heat wave ended and a cold front rolled in, we had highs in the seventies today and it may dip down as low as the upper fifties tonight! Took advantage of the cool weather and washed and waxed the Paddy Wagon, it has a nice glossy and shine.

Well I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately so here are some capsule reactions from the Pumpkin.
First a movie I actually saw at the theater, with Wade and Mike and his daughter who’s like 14.
Crank- Very, very silly action movie, the perimise being a guy gets poised by this “Chinese Drug” and now he has to keep his keep his adrenaline level consistently high or he’ll die, his doctor is out of town so he has to stay alive until the doc can fly back in. Yeah, like I said very silly, but fortunately it knows it, and runs with it in sort of tongue-in-cheek roller coaster ride kind of way.
The rest are courtesy of netflix and no one but me and Dart were subjected to them
Satan’s Blood- A Spanish horror film from 1977. A young couple goes out for a drive and when this other couple pulls up to them, the driver in this other car insists he knows the first guy, that they were school mates and the strangeness ensues. Lots pseudo-Satanic going ons, lots of weird creepy stuff, lots of satanic nudity, lots of senseless stuff that went nowhere and a cool but cheesy 70’s twist ending that made me smile. All and all I rather liked this film, wasn’t scary but there was always enough weird stuff going on to keep me entertained. I also enjoyed on another level, I played it in its original Spanish with the English subtitles, most of the times I forgot to look at the subtitles but when I did I noted a lot of differences, some of them were just translation choices which my first reaction was to think I would have made differently, as they subtly changed what was being said, but after a while I also realized that they tried to go for more common turns of phrase, which while not quite accurate depictions of what was being said, were close enough, and it’s certainly easier to read something familiar when it’s flying by on the screen, so I can understand that choice. But on two occasions, that I noticed, the subtitles diverged greatly as to what was being said, no reason that I could think of, in both cases it was some mundane point, but they were just completely different mundane points.
Masters of Horror: Dario Argento: Jenifer- This masters of horror was based on a story from Creepy magazine that I remember reading way back when, it was drawn by Berni Wrightson. I liked this one, not as much as Carpenter’s “Cigarette Burns” but it was a good and effectively creepy film.
Masters of Horror: Don Coscarelli: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road- Don Coscarelli directed the Phantasm films, he also directed Bubba Ho-Tep, which was based off a story by Joe Lansdale, I’ve met Joe, interesting fellow, struck me as personable and friendly if a little weird. Anyway this one is also based off of a Landsdale story, sadly it was just OK, I liked it well enough, but it boiled down to being a slasher film, one with a twist, but still a slasher film and that’s never been my favorite flavor for horror.
The Diabolical Doctor Z- Schlocky horror flick from the sixties, kinda dull for the most part, but it did have a couple of interesting scenes and plot that could be salvageable for a game someday, so if only for that reason, I don’t feel like it was a complete waste of time.
Diabolique- French film from 1955. The sickly wife of real jerk of a headmaster of a moldering private boarding school, and his mistreated mistress, team up to murder the bastard, but when the body disappears the tension rises. This one started out a little slow but picked up steam once it got to the murder, lots of twist and turns, liked this one a lot.

Classic Trek gets a face lift. Not sure how I feel about this, on one hand it may be cool to see the eps with new effects, might improve somethings, on the other it just feels kinda wrong somehow, like colorizing classics.

Hey I'm neither conscientious or agreeable, to hell with that I say, I just don’t agree and I don’t care what anyone one thinks about it.;)
