I'm a Mac user. Have been for a long time. Now, in the smartphone era, i'm using a Droid(ish) phone. The phone itself is a huge improvement on any non-iPhone gizmos i've had up until now. It's been my experience that the PC world seems to 'catch up to Mac' over time. Maybe i'm just opinionated.
One reason i've heard over and over again since high school is that Mac 'gets in the way' of you using your PC. It's software may work, but you can't manipulate it or do things like you can if you get into the gutz and workings of a Windows machine.
I've never understood this. Our family had a Tandy way back in the day, working off of DOS. I used it for a while. Then i realized i could get more done just not using a computer at all. If i had the time to learn DOS back then i would have, sure. But i didn't and don't want to. I'd rather have a machine with a program that doesn't have to be fixed in lines of code when i want to do something. Later, in high school we got a Mac, and i used it to color my lineart. It was amazing. I used it to set up personal databases. I customized the entire theme and layout and feel of the Mac using preferences, not by doing surgery on the BIOS. Just...clicking and picking. I don't recall Mac's OS 'getting in my way' because i was using my computer as a tool to do things, and the software supported those things.
But non-apple software stuff feels different. For instance, i wanted to change the default image of the 'unknown user' icon for my contacts on my Droid. After searching the phone, expecting there to be an option or preference somewhere, then the internet, which lead me straight to the banality of infinite forums... i found a 'simple' solution.
here it is. I apparently have to find and install three different bootlegger programs and 'hack' my phone to change one icon. I tried changing my regular contacts to personal images, they have all reverted to the original 'unknown user' icon. It's a dumb and ugly icon, depicting two vague mannequin-esqe faces. I wish it would go away. But, as with most non-apple software, i spend most of my time just wishing it would work. Or maybe i'm just opinionated.
