This is an interesting blend of linguistics, genealogy, and statistics: Give the World Names Profiler a European, Indian, or Japanese surname and it will show you not only in which country it is most common but also in which regions and cities. I was mildly surprised to learn that my mom's last name is not German, as we'd always thought, but actually Swedish. And it seems bwdiederich's ancestors probably came from Luxembourg. And why are there way more Johnsons per capita in the US than in the UK, where the name presumably came from?
