there's a certain nerve in the human body
where you can feel you heart break

it's right above the stomach.
when the right words are said,
you feel it snap like a twig,
and you get an empty feeling
like an unknown force
falling right through your torso.

it's what happens
when you feel disbelief,
but you knew it was coming.
when you refuse to accept,
but you know you're in denial.
when you had suspected,
and found out that you were right.
when you had been warned,
but didn't listen.

were you on the phone at the time?
maybe they wrote you a letter?
perhaps they had the courage
to say it to your face?
...e-mail?

not much can compare
to that atom bomb dropping in your stomach
when your worst fears
have just been confirmed
by the one you trusted the most.

and your tears
won't erase anything...
...except for the absence of their laughter.
