Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes. Turn and face the strange.
WOW. Was my last post here really almost 8 months ago?? Ridiculous...but not altogether unbelievable.
So hello again, old-timers and new-timers. 'Tis I again, here to announce a slight change to Gravity Eyecons' format. This journal started when I discovered a thing called "Photoshop" and the concept of "icons", little 100X100 digital avatars that forum users across the net -- but mainly on Live Journal -- use to represent themselves. Icons are a deceptively minute medium. The fact that they are constrained to 100 pixels across each way presents an intriguing design challenge. How does anything that small manage to look cool? Add a dash of creativity, style and pure fangirl(or fanboy)ness and the answer may surprise you. I spent quite a bit of time (and quite a few gigabytes worth of hard drive space) designing these little icons, and to this day I credit them with the interest I currently have in graphic design. Icon design taught me the ultimate basics of good composition, color theory and the multitude of uses for Photoshops tools. I've been inspired by the Live Journal icon community in more ways than one and I humbly tip my hat to every icon artist that I've followed in past times as well as recent. To those that don't think icons, on the basis that many of them are created from copyrighted material, are legitimate art, phoo to you, I say. Icons ARE art. They are, like any kind of art, personal expression, unique to each person who makes them. But best of all, they are a lot of fun to make and look at. They are also one of the best ways a dorky fan like me can pay homage to her favorite films and television shows. :-D
So, to move past that tangent, I regret to say that I probably won't be making as many (or any) icons as I used to. These days I've started finding new challenges in formats that go beyond the tiny 100X100 box I used to work in. That is, my box has expanded by 8.5X11 inches or so. :D In lieu of designing an entire portfolio website as many graphic designers do (I don't have that kind of time right now...in the future perhaps I will), I've decided to make this journal a place that potential employers and fans of design can visit to see my previous style of work and new style of work. It's here, so I might as well...I don't want to leave GE a dusty reminder of past days. I hope those that have watched this journal will continue to watch it, and those that happen by it will find something interesting to look at. As always, I will be open to artistic suggestions and even requests, for icons or other formats of design work.
My latest interests have expanded to poster design; web design (concept, not coding); logo design; illustration and motion graphics. I will try to keep this blog updated with whatever new stuff I come up with and maybe even do little blogs about the work so that others can follow my workflow (such as it is) and maybe learn something new in the process.
Lets see how this thing works out! Feel free to shout out at me at any time regarding the work or technical questions. As always, I love to hear from you guys! :)
