a couple years ago i inherited a sofabed and a couple of floor lamps .. i set one up behind the sofa and put the other in the opposite corner by my computer ~ the bulb burnt out about six months ago, and my lazy solution was just to swap in the other lamp ~ until it too died about a month ago. i took a look at the bulb, thinkin i’d head out n get new ones, and was baffled ~ the bulb was inside a housing that didn’t seem to be removable ~ no screws or latches and no obvious way to get it out. i asked the donor about it a little while later and they had never changed the bulbs whilst they owned them and weren’t sure you could, now that they thought of it .. they said that they were me i’d just pitch em, surprised they lasted as long as they did ..

whilst walking in to work one morning i hit on the idea that i should like to get a lava lamp ~ i have known a few people who had one and have some positive associations, and i myself have never had one before. i browsed a few shops and the following saturday i dialed up a few places on the internetz and made a few phone calls, got some leads, some of which panned out and some which didn’t .. and then .. i’m not even sure how i got there but i found myself on sears canada’s website, under lighting .. and this came up ~

i called up the downtown store and explained what i was up to, and did they have any? i’ll be right over. i was transferred and no they didn’t .. even put me on hold to see if any other stores had any ~ and returned to say that not everything in the catalogue is readily available in stores, but i can always order it directly by calling the number on my screen. *sigh*

i don’t have a credit card, so the operator standing by on the phone reluctantly set it up that they would ship one to the downtown store and i’d go in and pick it up and pay c.o.d. she asked me if i had a sears card and tried to sell me on it .. do i need one to make this transaction? no. then no, thank you.

i got a message on my machine that it had arrived, and so i went in to fetch it last friday. the lady at the counter said the computer wasn’t working, can i come back? um, no. this is the whole reason i made the trip down here. she bid me have a seat and went off to find someone who could get the computer going .. two women came back with her, one in a skirted business suit and the other in jeans and a t-shirt, and in a few minutes they got it all sorted out. i gave my name and showed my i.d. and she brought the box out, setting it down on the counter on its side, completely oblivious to the this side up and two arrows. as she turned to the register the woman in the business suit stepped in and turned the box right side up whilst smiling at me, and she made sure to put it in the bag right side up too.

i brought it home and set it up .. and couldn’t stop grinnin .. it’s the perfect gi artifact, the best of both worlds. he scores!

of course the 2008-09 season is underway, and it just so happened that my sens were playing that night against the visiting phoenix coyotes. two things piqued my interest ~ one was that captain daniel alfredsson was returning to the lineup following surgery to remove a bone chip in his knee, and second was that another of my all-time favourite players, ex-canuck and offseason signing jarkko ruutu would also be in the lineup, being his début home game as a senator.
by the time i got home the second period was almost over and the sens were leading 4-0 ~ alfredsson had two assists and jarkko had scored the first goal of the game, being his first as senator.
by the time the third period was underway the lamp was beginning to lava .. the yotes scored early but jarkko scored again to restore the lead .. phoenix kept coming and scored two more before ottawa closed it for a 6-3 final. heh i decided i should light the lamp every game day .. that seemed ironically apropos ..

.. except they have since gone on a four-game losing streak, outscored 14-8 .. o_O

i have no regret about getting it, but i do have to say that it’s not really a lamp .. it’s not very bright, not bright enough to read by ~ red fluid with pale yellow lava .. my monitor with a white screen is brighter ..

.. so friday night on the way home i got a $10 gooseneck desk lamp with a 60w bulb .. sort of like the long way around to an effective and practical solution ..
