volume four game one
they had been predicting overcast skies, winds and chilly temperatures, and they were right, sort of ~ it did clear up by 7, but there was a pretty good wind coming across the field, all of us bombers wished we had brought another layer or two ..
we were up against the pirates ~ not everyone on their team showed up, so we had a little practice first .. a batter, a pitcher, a catcher and everyone else out in the field. one came out my way and i ran over, got my glove and right hand up ~ not sure how i did it, but the ball went off my hand first, then into my glove. it stung, but i made the catch ..
at about 7:15 the pirates didn’t have a team, so they technically forfeited .. we played anyways, spotting them a catcher and a third baseman.
at the bench, i was nursing my hand, tried to shake it out .. already it was swelling up .. i kept playing though.
i didn’t bat in the practice bit there, so my first hit of the year was in the game ~ first pitch too. high enough to clear the first baseman and deep along the baseline .. but foul. aw. my second hit was along the ground, the first baseman left the bag to get it, which allowed me to get there safely. two outs. i advanced to second on the next play and came in to score from second after that .. woo!! in my other at-bat i made it to first but got out at second.
out in the field i didn’t get too much ~ because they were short players it was like the same people up every time and they all hit it out to right field. i came in as backup for first and second and helped collect some spillage, pinned the one runner on first. “you’re a handy backup,” k. noted .. it hurt a bit when i threw it in, the sweeping motion forcing the blood to my finger .. otherwise it was okay ..
.. and yet despite being shorthanded, the pirates beat us 12-10 .. but it counts as a win for us since they didn’t technically field a team. dodged that bullet ..
i walked home and by the time i got here my finger was throbbing and swollen .. i iced it and tried to keep it elevated, but when i got up this morning it was all purple, right down into my hand even, and swollen tight.
i looked online about broken fingers and they said that if there is bruising and swelling, chances are it’s broken .. and i didn’t have the same mobility i had in the hours after it happened, i could barely move it today .. takin a shower was excruciating. so .. seein as i had the day off, i wandered up to the hospital emergency room.
a doctor checked me out and i had some x-rays taken .. sure enough .. a finger is divided into three segments ~ the first one, closest to my hand, was dislocated .. and the second middle segment was fractured, you could see the crack in the x-ray and everything. *sigh*. at least it was worth coming in to the hospital for, methought ..
the doctor tried to pop it back into place, and although it really hurt, there was a pop and suddenly it felt a thousand times better, i even got some mobility back. they gave me a local anæsthetic and worked it a bit more, put a splint on it with the intent of aligning the bones properly, although that didn’t exactly work .. even after a second attempt the bones weren’t exactly in the right place.
so .. from here they said my best option is to go in for surgery ~ first they will attempt to non-invasively put in a pin using an x-ray scope, and if that is unsuccessful they will actually open up my finger and pin/screw/bolt it back together in alignment. oh yeah ~ did i mention they will have to put me under to do that? .. yeah. o_O
so my right-hand ring finger is in a splint .. and sometime in the coming weeks i will have an operation to set it right. *shakes head* .. but i met a lot of cool people in the x-ray room and in the emergency room there ..
