iPhone games

Okay, so maybe someone can explain this one to me, as I'm just drawing blanks. I can't for the life of me figure this one out:

Why the sudden trend towards everyone making iPhone games, and porting existing/old games to the iPhone? It's a platform that's clunky at best for gaming, with only a touchscreen, a tilt sensor, a microphone, and a massive zero viable buttons, so we're left with only the most annoying, clunky, gimmicky parts of a Nintendo DS style control, except without the stylus and without the part that makes it actually fun to play (hint: it is the buttons). Instead, we're just left to trail greasy fingerprints across a tiny screen, fingers which largely obscure the action at hand.

And yet, this seems to be the portable gaming market of the month, judging by the sheer amount of iPhone games either in development or being ported. Hell, I now even hear Doom -- Doom of all games -- is being ported to the iPhone. I understand that it's the flavour of the month gadget for the discerning geek and everyone wants to get a slice of the money pie, but am I just completely missing the point here, or is the iPhone an utterly abysmal platform for anything but the most casual, vapid gaming?
