Lost and found?

Nov 16, 2004 18:13

I can’t believe it, I can’t believe I’ve been to this town for two weeks and I lose my wallet. One the one and only night I go out no less. I noticed it was gone when I got to the hotel and had to pay the cab driver. I felt like an idiot looking for it. Thankfully I had some cash in my skirt pocket or I would have really been in trouble. I had ( Read more... )

I took his answer with a grain of salt and just let it pass as I started to eat. The food wasn't all that bad. The company on the other hand, still annoyed me but oddly not as much right now.

I swallowed a bite of chicken and looked over at him as I took a sip of water. He was a text book that was volumes long with many layers and what have you. He was the type that didn't let his guard down and if you did you'd be lucky or dead.

I sat back in my chair and looked at him. "So when you say firm I'm assuming you own a lawfirm...so what is it you do Lindsey?" I took a sip of water and set the glass back down. "And do you have a last name? I mean you do know mine..."

He's peaking my curiosity...again.

I almost choked on my chicken. "Me own the firm?"

I coughed and took a sip of my water and started to laugh. "No, I'm the co-head of the Special Projects division. Just a lowly lawyer. You know what they say about us being evil?"

She gave me a look.

"At Wolfram and Hart. It's true. Though, I'd almost thought you'd know. Considering your ties with the slayer, and her ties with the thorn in my side."

I tried not to look amused at his reaction when I asked about where he worked. I listened intently as he spoke. Ahh yes, evil lawyers.

Then he mentioned Buffy and it was my turn to choke. I cleared my throat and looked at him. "H-how..." I went over what I have in my wallet and there was no way possible for him to know about Buffy or her being a slayer in there.

Thorn in his side? I've no clue what he's talking about.

I set my fork down and looked at him. "How do you know about these things?" I frowned. "Did you check up on me?" My voice sounded hurt. I didn't mean it to be, why should I care that he did a background check on me and spied on my friends?

He was just an annoyance that wouldn't give me back my wallet till I came out to dinner with him... Well, now there's more. He knows about things. Thing's he shouldn't know.

I sighed. After tonight, I'd never see this girl again, and that pained me more than I cared to admit. So screw it.

"I'm not joking about evil lawyers Tara. Every employee at Wolfram and Hart has signed a contract binding their soul to the company. So we're all forced to do their bidding and loose everything that we are in the process."

I leaned back in my chair and put my napkin on the table.

"I went looking for you so I did a background check, and they had a file on you. Your a witch, helped bring the slayer back from the dead. The slayer who is the one true love of Angel, the vampire with a soul. Angel who cut off my hand, almost killed me and decided I was worth saving till I chose life and betrayed him."

I shrugged.

"There was more things that seemed personal, so I just read the overview."

Ok. Stunned and shocked table for me. He knew everything. He knew about Buffy and Angel, he knew about me being a witch. He even knew about the resurrection spell.

"There was more things that seemed personal, so I just read the overview."I resisted the flashing urge to roll my eyes and tell him how considerate that was. But I don't ( ... )

"Do I look like a happy person Tara? Do I look like I like my job or myself? Because if that's what you think then the saying that Witches are pretty observant is just that. A saying."

I stood up.

"I do what I have to do to survive in the world I live in. I've made mistakes in my life. But I made my bed and I'm the one who has to lie in it. So before you go all self righteous and judge me, stop pretending to be one of the few that is worth it."

I pulled out her wallet and threw it on the table along with a business card.

"That's the number for a guy I know. He's not part of the firm, tell him Mac sent you and he'll get you a place to stay, on the level. The limo will drive you home, I'm walking. Have a nice night Ms. McClay."

With that I walked away from the table to check in with Julian, sign for the meal and then walked out of the restuarant into the smog filled air.

I sat there stunned as he uncorked and threw my wallet at me. I picked it up and looked at the card. A part of me was slightly disappointed that he didn't leave his card.

I watched as he walked out of restaurant and without hesitation I got up after him. I pulled on my jacket as I made my way out of the restaurant. I nodded to the man that waited on us and thanked him.

I pulled my jacket to me and looked up and down the street, I saw a shadow walking away and I hurried over to it. "Lindsey. Lindsey wait."

I stopped in front of him, catching my breath, and stood there. Why had I followed him? Why did I care that he wasn't happy? Maybe because I was just as unhappy. It kind of hurt to see someone else with that look in their eyes. The look I had since Willow did that spell on me.

I offered him a small smile. "It's not just a saying."

I stopped when I heard her voice behind me. Why I wasn't sure, but I did, with my hands in my pockets.

"Oh really?" I replied, taken in a bit by her smile.

"Look I'm sorry for ... in there." I really wasn't the type to apologize for anything, so this was probably a monumental occasion. I half expected for Lilah to pop out of the shadows and mock me.

"Really." He was silent for a moment before he apologized. Now that surprised me. I expected him to come at me fists baring and telling me that I was just trying to manipulate him or something. But again, he surprised me.

"It's ok." I say softly. There was a moment that passed as we stood there. I nervously chewed the corner of my lip and looked around. I realized where we were. It wasn't too far from a little coffee shop I'd seen while exploring.

I look at him and give him a half smile. "Care to join me for coffee?"

I hoped he said yes. I realized something. A part of me wanted to be worth it. I wanted to take a jackhammer and get under the hard layers to what he was really like.

I stared into her eyes as I weighed my options.

No matter which road I took, it wasnt' going to get this girl out of my head, and that pissed me off. But I'd always been a curious person, sometimes impulsive. It's pretty much how I got into the mess that was my life in the first place.

"Yeah, I'd like that."

I wasn't ready to let much of my gaurd down, but I was pretty sure I was over intentionally making her uncomfortable. Not that I wouldn't make her uncomfortable, I did that wouldn't meaning to with most people I met. Generally they weren't women I was attracted to, cause I'd never had a problem, never had to chase.

I gave him a genuine smile when he said yes. "Now it's my turn to pick the place. Follow me." I turned and started walking, the fog was so thick, it wasn't like anything I'd seen in California before.

We turned up the block and headed into the shop. "Two please." This place was nice, it was quiet and very relaxed, they had mix matched chairs and couches all around.

The woman sat us in the back on one of the love seats. I sat down by the window and looked over to him. "I've been to this place a few times, I like it. It's very relaxed." I smile slightly and smooth out my skirt.

"Can I help you?" The waitress came up to us. "Ummm I'd like a caramel with whip cream please." I turned to Lindsey. "They've got everything." I smiled slightly and leaned back on the love seat, not really making any notice about how close we were sitting.

I closed my eyes for a moment and ran my fingers through my hair. I heard the jukebox kick on and I tried not to laugh at the song.

Sounds like a scene from the silver screen...Yeah, that's how it was...

"I'll have the same." I told the waitress.

I idly thrummed my fingers on the table to a familiar beat. The I heard the song beginning to play.

I couldn't help but break out into a goofy grin.

"Maybe someone's trying to tell us something." I said idly.
