Around the world tonight, in embassies, dance halls, dining halls and clubs, active duty Marines are celebrating the Corps' 233rd birthday.
I did a few of those birthday balls, long long ago. They were a few of the really good moments that came out of all the hours and years extreme cleaning, running and hiking, all the yelling and mind-game-playing that also came with the nice uniforms and bad-dude reputations.
I served for about six years - from January of 1987 to December of 1993. I did mainly computer support for units in California, and I did a tour on a mobile unit that went to the Philippines, Singapore, and spent a long time in the Gulf for Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
I'm glad I'm out, but I'm also glad I served, and I salute and thank those who came before (like my
Dad), and those who serve today.
