why?

So one of the teachers at my school has discovered that singing songs in english is a remarkably effective warmup activity. He plays a CD and passes out a lyrics sheet, missing a few words. The students have to listen and fill in the blanks, then try to sing with the CD the second time around.

Well, this would all be fine and dandy if the song he picked wasn`t from... dun dun dun.... THE BACKSTREET BOYS.

I had to stand up and sing it for the class. It was like a stereotypical nightmare, where you suddenly find yourself standing up in front of the class and singing the Backstreet Boys except for I wasn`t naked! And the worst part is, now I have "Love is all I have to give" stuck in my head!

There`s a line in that song that goes "I`ll make you mine." When the teacher was translating and explaining it in Japanese, he phrased it as, literally, "I will transform you into an object that belongs to me." The whole class - boys and girls- all immediately burst into laughter and then started darting their eyes around uncomfortably and saying (in japanese) "Object? Really?!" Dude. And people say that Japan is behind the times in women`s lib.

Anyway, there is a whole generation of Japanese children who now believe that American love songs are the creepiest in the world.
