D and I are really struggling with where we want to live. The school systems (city and county) are combining, which for the near future is going to make one huge mess out of an already disfunctional system. The various suburbs within the county are most likely going to form their own school districts. You can read all about the hullabaloo on various websites if you search for shelby county school merger; including this gem from the
Huffington Post.
My husband is a country boy. He grew up in rural Arkansas and moved to Germantown (one of the Shelby County suburbs) at 11 years old (over 25 years ago) when it was still very "country." We purchased our homes in Cordova (another suburb)because we could get more house for the money and not pay the ridiculous property taxes that city of Memphis residents have to endure. I on the other hand, grew up in the city and absolutely love it. Being close to shopping, the zoo, museums, not to mention my job and the girls' current schools.
If we move to the area where D wants to go, Collierville, or more specifically the Collierville reserve area that's right at the next county border, I will be in the car for approximately two hours each work day. To me, that is a ridiculous amount of time for a daily commute.
I feel like I comprised in saying we could move to Germantown...but D wants to go further out because finding an affordable house in Germantown with a lot of the features we want is hard.
Maybe we should pack up and move out of Memphis completely...Colorado or Montana sound good to me.
