So, End of Time and the start of a new season. Be warned, spoilers and opinions ahead.
End of Time part 1 was… nothing spectacular. The best bits were the Doctor and the Master having a bit of a heart to heart and the Silver Cloak. (The latter of which there should totally be a spin-off of. Wilf!)
I was a bit disappointed at the non-use of Donna and Naismith though. (That and I had been spoiled about the presence of Donna and the Master via someone posting a picture of Catherine Tate and John Simm on-set and saying they shipped it now and thus lead to me hoping that Donna would come face to face to the Master. (And bitchslap him.))
The second part. Well.
I loved the part where the Doctor tried to convince the Master to go a-exploring with him. This also applies to the EPIC tag-teaming of the Time Lords in the last part of the special. My brain. It pretty much exploded with awesome at that part.
And yes, convenient Master shaped plot hole so that he can pop up again sometime.
Things that interested me:
using the mad as sibyls/the artificial madness of the Master disqualifying him for this job
Time Lords have metal gauntlets of POWER (there needs to be a Torchwood crossover concerning this because…. well. I’m pretty sure that glove was a reused prop. (Much like the alien costumes and music in Jack’s bar scene. And I severely hope it isn’t a case of alien technological convergent design)
Donna’s safeguard feature thing (brain will explode in case of emergency)
Um, um um. Goodbye sequence was rather heartbreaking, because I knew David Tennant’s was breaking as well. The way that Martha and Mickey were jammed together as a pairing was rather odd though and something that I will pointedly ignore. The Sarah Jane goodbye was cute though. (If only because I think Luke is such a mini!Doctor.)
And I am still in confusion whether the line about borrowing a quid from Mr. Nobel/Noble because it is spoken words and I’m not sure if he was talking about Donna’s father or about Nobel, the person who invented dynamite and set up the Nobel prizes. (I mean, both work in the one quid becoming millions kind of way, but the Nobel one appeals to the nerd in me rather than the somewhat boring ‘Oh, see? Her father did give her something in a roundabout way’.)
It was a good send off though. And I just hope that the Moff leaves Rose well enough alone because I could understand Ten hanging onto her but I am thoroughly sick of Rose and I really hope that Eleven has put that behind him. I wouldn’t say no to Eleven seeing Martha or Jack or Donna or Sarah Jane again, because I am either partial or ambiguous about them. (In fact, I know that Eleven sees Sarah Jane again, because there is going to be another two seasons of The Sarah Jane Adventures.)
(And yes, Donna is currently my favourite companion to date; mostly because I didn’t like Catherine Tate and was prepared to hate her and her role but then she did Donna and I fell in love how Catherine Tate handled the role and made me fall in metaphorical love with Donna.)
Also? So, so making it a habit to tap in 4/4 time whenever I'm doing bored tapping.
Firstly, MATT SMITH GOT AN ACCENT. Well, not as suddenly acquired, but the 11th Doctor has one and it is charming and all I really (
ever) asked of Matt Smith when I learnt he was going to play the Doctor.
As to him being the Doctor… well, I can’t really fault his portrayal of the Doctor, because he’s kept the quirky and fast-paced babbling/thinking out loud and transformed the ‘last of the timelords’ angst/loneliness into badassery, WHICH IS AWESOME. (And a bit less frightening than
what happened with Ten.)
As to outfit, RUNNING AROUND THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE (or on hospital roofs) seems to make a difference. The on-set photos made him and it look horrible, but post-pro (and, you know, actual filming) is a lovely place. ♥
TARDIS? The view that appeared in episode reminded me a bit less of the original TV series of H2G2 (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and more of my dad’s workshop. Which while it does contain some very impressive brass hardware is not steampunky and more like a hardware store threw-up in it in a rather dusty and discordant manner. My dad’s workshop of course, not the TARDIS. But the TARDIS does have the feel that someone went a bit crazy upon walking into the hardware store… though I do like it because it reminds me of my dad’s workshop. I ESPECIALLY like the little things set into the console and the way the entire thing looks so much neater and tidier and prettier.
Except I dislike the cortex.
It’s a giant blown glass phallus and I much prefer the green-lit tube within tube of the old TARDIS. (Which I will make a little necklace version of, one day.)
The opening sequence. I am disappoint with the animation, mostly because it looks like the camera is trying to find it’s way through the dust clouds of Eyjafjallajökull. The music… well, I do prefer the old one, but I also think this one is a remix of one of the even older versions. (Just like the old one was.)
Er… storywise? I was a little distracted by the shiny newness. There was nothing that seemed particularly first-ep-intro friendly to me, but I have watched 4 and a half seasons of this show before. But as a general thing, first episodes of a season are generally first-ep-intro friendly except this is kind of also first-ep-intro for the long time fans because everything is NEW.
But anyway, I am, in hindsight, a little disturbed at the thought that the Doctor would’ve taken an 8-10 year old girl around the universe, but the red gumboots were ADORABLE.
Oh and I want to squish the entire kid!sequence because it was adorable and full of quotes and why yes the Scottish teach their kids to cook early. (And fish + custard does not seem that odd to me because NOTHING can be worse than fish with remoulade sauce. (Which is supposedly a traditional accompaniment, but is FOUL as it contains gherkins, anchovy and capers.)
Amy and her wedding was… amusingly transparent. As soon as she insisted she be back by the next morning it was pretty obvious something big was happening the next day and… well, for a girl from a small village, getting married is just about the biggest thing that can happen right? (All the dolls and stuff were kind of adorable though.)
Speaking of small village, I kind of loved the dynamics they used and constructed. Everyone knew Amy and it was hilarious.
The rather obligatory flashback was… obligatory and reminds me that I should watch some old!Who.
Oh! And I’m kind of needlessly excited that Amy had a wedding planned before she went off with the Doctor. Because… all the companions in the new series got married after and there’s that hint they were just settling for someone, but here is Amy/Amelia, getting married BEFORE she has adventures with the Doctor.
Okay, even though everyone in the village knows about her preoccupation with the Doctor and the fact there were all those Doctor dolls laying about in front of the dress and she’s gone off with him the NIGHT BEFORE, I still find it rather sweet that she has a romantic interest outside of the Doctor before going with the Doctor.
And I shall be incredibly sad if the Doctor stuffs up the dates or there is UST. So, yeah, I’m frantically hoping that this will be a platonic companionship and that Amy gets her wedding.
And Karen Gillian is very pretty, although I do think Eleven has a hang up about red-heads this time.
I also think I spotted a couple of season arc things, mostly to do with silence of something? I can't remember, but there is that and the fact we haven't seen what happened with Amy's cousin Jeff (I think it was her cousin...) and that video conference.
Yes, EoT write up horribly late (and the Sarah Jane and Torchwood ones shall be done eventually I promise) but first episode of the new season... a bit less so.
