making smoke with photoshop?
can someone tell me if this style:

are actual photos, or did someone make them in photoshop? I've looked for smoke photoshop tutorials but none look this good or 'realistic' - is it photography, or can someone point me to a good tutorial to make this (or just explain to me)? I feel like I've exhausted the "create smoke with Photoshop" google search :/ The stock photos I've found are good but we need specific shapes and I wonder if I can just make them myself.
