I went to a lecture tonight given by Gary Koepke, because it's always fun when the college sponsors lectures aimed at designers (and my Ad professor made us go xD ). I confess to having no idea who the guy was. *shameshame* He talked about his work and Modernista!, and about halfway through the lecture it hit me: his agency is the one with the obnoxious red square website that
got linked in this community a couple weeks back! Having made the realization, of course, I couldn't just sit quiet during the Q&A. ;) So I asked "Who designed the Modernista! website, and what were they thinking?"
Koepke's answer, paraphrased, was that it was a bit of a pet project of his and that they were aiming to get the user to define the agency rather than the agency presenting a front to the user, as well as to harness the power of Web 2.0 social networking. Also, he noted that advertising agencies are usually viewed as hiring out the design job to digital people to create a swooshy facade, and that Modernista! aimed to "lift the digital curtain" and just let people see the work.
I guess hearing his answer made me understand it more... but I still think the site's rather obnoxious. =P
(I totally want to buy a Cadillac now.)
