I watched a PBS documentary on Rockwell Kent last night. He seemed to truly detest working in the advertising world. To me, it came across that he found such work to be beneath him. Here's my question: should ad design and illustration always take a back seat to the more traditional fine arts, such as painting and sculpture? Do the creative processes and mass production of ad design negate the product's status of art? Can that sort of design stand alone as it's own fine art?
