Monday was Tariah's first day of school. It was an interesting experience for me in so many ways. I have to say that I didn't get anxious about the fact that she was going to school. I was ready for her to start, but she is going for less than four hours a day. It's not like she is gone for too long.
Blaine and I walked her to school on the first day. We went in, saw her teacher, got her name tag, and watched her take everything in. She wanted to explore the classroom right away, but all of the other kids were outside on the playground, so she went too. When the bell rang, the kids lined up and came in. Her teacher, Mrs. Palacios, told the parents to say goodbye. Funny thing was that she was ready for us to leave from the very beginning. :-)
On the walk home, Thayana told us to go back and get Tariah. When I explained to her that Tariah needed to stay at school, Thayana said that she didn't want Tariah to stay there and that we needed to turn around and go get her. Hee hee. Poor baby is not very happy about the whole situation. I am thinking that pre-school might be in Thayana's future when Tariah starts going to school full time. I don't know how Thayana would go without Tariah for seven hours a day without some sort of distraction.
I found that I knew a lot of the parents of other kindergartners already. Our neighbors across the street have their daughter in the same class as Tariah, and we have never really talked. I always thought that we wouldn't stay here long enough to develop relationships with our neighbors, but I guess we should have. Tracy is the name of the mom, and her daughters are Kiana and Kylee. I apologized to Tracy for never coming by and saying hi. It always seemed like we were leaving the house whenever they were outside, and we never took the time to stop and talk.
In addition to my neighbors, many of the other parents are Starbucks customers. I think that one thing that struck me about the first day of school is that I finally started feeling like I was a part of the community. When you see so many other parents from your neighborhood that you have things in common with, it's hard to feel like you are in separate worlds anymore.
I also have plans to volunteer in Tariah's class, so that will be nice too.
Monday afternoon, Tariah and I completed her first homework assignment. It was an art project - a flower that she was supposed to decorate with anything we could think of - buttons, beans, glitter, paint, fabric, etc. I used the flower that was sent home by Mrs. Palacios as a template and made one for Thayana and I also. Thayana and I will decorate hers in the next couple of days. Tariah and I used paint, beans, split peas, and glitter to decorate ours. We had a ton of fun together.
I have to say that I am completely exhausted this week. I get up at 6:45, get Tariah ready and walk her to school, come home and have breakfast with Thayana, get dressed for the day, go pick up Tariah, come home and clean, and then go to work from about 6:30 to 11:30 pm. Whew.
Camping with Uncle Tod and Aunt Renee this weekend. Can't wait.
