Forgot to mention in my last post...

I went shopping yesterday and bought some healthier food choices for my girls. Since I skipped more of the sugary snacks and bought some organics instead, it actually came out pretty even. A half-gallon of organic, hormone-free milk at WinCo was about $3, which I don't mind paying. Especially since I got the stuff home and it tasted so good! It's a little bit sweeter than the regular milk, but I really like it and I love the fact that my children are going to be putting something that is much healthier into their bodies.

In addition to the milk, I got hormone-free yogurt, organic instant mac and cheese (I usually add veggies to make it a healthy lunch), Boca lasagna, and eggs from chickens that are fed no artificial stimulants. I passed up American cheese for the provolone I found in the deli and also bought frozen fruit bars instead of the sugar-filled popsicles that kids usually eat. These are the things that my girls eat a lot of. Their protein comes mostly from eggs and dairy, so I am excited to introduce cleaner, more pure versions of these foods to their diets. And since this seems to be such an easy transition so far, I am hoping to continue to switch more of our regular foods to fresher, organic and/or less processed foods. I am such a nerd because I am so excited about this. WinCo is a bit lacking in the organic and hormone-free department, so I may end up shopping in two different places again. My children are worth it, though.

My next transition will be to healthier versions of cold cereal, chicken nuggets, snack foods like cookies and crackers, hot dogs (we already eat low-fat Jenni-O turkey dogs), and prepared foods such as soups and frozen dinners.

***Edited to add: I just fed the girls the new mac and cheese, and it was yummy! I liked it better than Kraft. The brand is Annie's, in case anyone is interested.
