GRANT’S ENGAGING OLYMPIC PROGRAM FOR BEIJING.

Recently engaged Australian team captain Grant Hackett, who will marry fiancée, singer-song-writer Candice Alley next year, just keeps on keeping on in the pool.

Grant hasn’t ruled out competing in the Olympic 10 km open water event in Beijing, saying he would treat the event as a "bonus" - beyond the most important task of retaining the Olympic 1,500m title for a record third time.

(No male swimmer has ever won three successive Olympic gold medals).

Our own Kieren Perkins came the closest to capturing the Olympic ‘Hat -trick’ with gold in 1992 and 1996 and silver behind Grant in Sydney 2000.

Speaking at the Melbourne 2007 Ticket Launch, Hackett told The Australian newspaper: "My focus is 100 per cent on the pool and this (the 10km) will be my bonus event.

“But at the same time I really want to be competitive in the 10km. Coming three days after my 1500m, it fits in quite well in terms of my taper."

Hackett will certainly be the Ironman of the Olympics if he manages to swim the 1500m, 200m, 400m, and 4x200m relay and the 10km all in the same week!!!

congratulations to Grant and Candice! hope Grant doesn't burn out at the Olympics, though...---

Grant is also featured as one of the "Gods of Water" of the Telstra Australian Swimming Championships December 3-10, 2006. there is an amusing morphing poster on Swimming Australia, and a more serious (larger!) campaign poster in the eSwimmer November issue:

just thought i'd share. ;)
