I just came back from the doctors, with antibiotics. The doctor was fine, he listened to my breathing, looked down my throat, felt glands, and asked relevant questions.
Whilst typing out the thing for the prescription, he asked if I might be pregnant, which is a sensible thing to ask when handing out antibiotics. I said no. He then said was I using contraception, and then I said no, I'm gay. He looked a little awkward, and said how he had to ask, and sorry and it's just procedure, and I said it was totally fine, and absolutely understandable.
Still typing, he asked me how old my partner was, and then how long we'd been together. I answered. He then said 'it's just that, homosexuals, they do different things, and if you ever want to talk about your private areas, you can ask anything'. I said I was fine, and everything is fine.
He then, (still typing) said 'you know, it's just that infections can be passed easily..but you know your partner well enough right?' I said yes, that we lived together and were married and everything was fine.
He then said again, 'it's just you know for example homosexuals might use, you know, 'objects' and you must be careful'. I looked at him and said 'er, we're fine thank you'. He then said 'and you might do you know, anal sex, and you must be careful, it is easy to spread infection'.If you want to talk some more, come and see me again'.
I left with my prescriptions, thanked him, and went straight to the duty officer and reported an official complaint. The woman said he had behaved totally badly, and she would be having a chat with him. i said i was 41, had gone in for a throat infection, and didn't need a chat about using objects and anal sex.
This happens a lot, in the time Gemma and I have been to various doctors regarding our fertility treatment, we have had the weirdest things said to us, and usually it is possible to logically explain away why he or she said such things. But this time it was just wrong on every level.
It is depressing that this still happens, and I really feel upset about it this time, probably because i am ill and have been for ages, but also because (AGAIN) I felt like I didn't want to embarrass HIM, by pointing out his indescribably huge ignorance and rudeness.
