“Hermione,” he said, his body stiff, disentangling himself from her grasp.
She looked at him, and raised a quizzical brow. “What is it? It’s just a birthday; I won’t make a big deal of it if you…”
He raised a hand.
“What is it, Severus?” she asked, suddenly cautious.
“I have grown… honorable and... prudish... in my old age,” he said slowly, eyes boring into hers.
Her breath caught. “I…”
“Hermione…”
She raised a hand.
“…let me explain…”
“Happy Birthday, Severus,” she said softly, and walked out the door.
