Hermione had to wonder if he was feeling quite all right. Not interested? She wouldn’t have asked if she wasn’t interested, and he had to realise that, surely?

She decided to try a different approach. ‘Well, it’s just that this whole station,’ she motioned with her fork, narrowly avoiding stabbing the witch on her other side and having to apologise profusely before continuing, ‘it’s so very fascinating! I have absolutely no idea what sort of work is done in polar research stations.’

Snape looked at her.

‘Perhaps we could talk later? If you really wish to know everything about it.’

‘I’d rather not talk here in public,’ he whispered to her after dinner. ‘Even with privacy spells, there are just too many people around.’

Hermione nodded. Touching her arm briefly, he offered her a glass of wine and pointed towards the door to the narrow corridor leading to the various staff and guest quarters.

Once they’d stepped into the corridor, Snape flicked his wand. Hermione recognised the familiar buzz of Muffliato.

‘I’d invite you to my room, but after all the whispering I’ve been doing, I think my colleagues may already be wondering about my interest in you,’ he said.

‘Perhaps you shouldn’t have offered me that wine then,’ remarked Hermione. ‘Whether we go to your room or not, if anyone noticed, they will certainly think that’s where we are!’

‘Actually, it would be in my best interest if they thought so,’ he replied. ‘However, my room is off limits for anyone but me, and yours is not private enough. I’d like to take you out for a walk instead - it’s a beautiful moonlit night.’

Hermione raised an eyebrow. ‘It’s dark out there. And cold. We’re in Antarctica, in case you haven’t noticed!’

He shrugged. ‘You have clothes, don’t you?’
