The windows were black; the house was empty.
She moved wandless through the dark, guided only by need. She didn’t mind the doors that closed at her approach, suddenly stifling screams, or the whispers along the corridors.
In the room she sought, the light was high and cold as death, and the young woman standing in front of the fireless hearth cast no shadow. Her eyes were green, her face was white, her hair a dark blaze.
“You may go,” said Hermione. “I will take care of him.”
When the white lady vanished, the flames in the hearth leaped up.
