Part One
All was tranquil where she was positioned; engulfed in a book she’d picked up from the library. Her location was set leaning against a rock facing the edge of the Black Lake. Her back was towards the forest edge. The castle was still within distance, but she was far enough that no sounds reached her ears.
She had become so caught up in her reading that she missed the subtle shifting of the leaves from behind her.
As Severus approached, he grinned at his mischievousness. It wasn’t often that he was able to surprise Hermione, so this being the perfect time to do so, he took the opportunity.
Part Two
A gust of wind blew his cloak causing a rustling of leaves. He stopped and waited for Hermione to turn around to see what the noise was. She didn’t even look up from her book.
That girl and her damned books. I’m not even that bad.
He continued forward until she was well within reaching distance. Lurching his hand forward, Severus grasped her shoulders. A shrill cry of fright escaped her gaping mouth. With quick reflexes, Severus was able to stifle her scream with his hand.
Hermione turned to get a good look at her assailant, and upon realizing it was the very man with whom she was intimate, she gave him a light slap on the arm.
He donned a playful grin until Hermione replied impishly, “Oh don’t worry, I don’t get mad; I get even.”
