Harry fell on top of his mortal enemy. Gasping their last within a minute of the other, their blank eyes competed in a macabre staring competition.
Bodies were strewn over the battlefield Hogwarts had become, the few survivors clinging to each other. There were no real victors that day.
Severus cradled Hermione in his arms, blood oozing from his mouth with each pained breath. His long woollen robes were draped around both of them, keeping the wind from cutting them to the bone.
Attempting to speak, Severus choked, strangled coughs sending droplets of blood splattering on Hermione’s soft, smooth skin.

Streaks of crimson trickled down Hermione’s alabaster pale cheek until it was soaked up by Severus’s cloak.
Raising his shaking hand, Severus did his best to wipe the precious liquid off her, but only managed to spread the stain.
Teeth gritted against the excruciating pain wracking him, he bent his head to brush his lips against Hermione’s dry, cracked lips.
Pulling away, he opened his mouth, crying out as his agony worsened. After one dreadful moment, he was at peace, his hair trailing on the muddy ground.
He joined Hermione in death.
The silence of the grave reigned over Hogwarts.
