“Acci-ac-achoo!”

“Are you quite alright, Miss Granger?”  Professor Snape stopped at the doorway of his apprentice’s suite.

“I’m sorry, Professor.  It seems a spring allergy has caught me.”

That was a disappointment.  A head cold was easily treated with Pepper-up.  Allergies were harder to deal with; the process of locating a suitable treatment was more time-consuming.

“Accio ti-ish-shoo!”

Snape raised an eyebrow at the tissue box that wiggled, but didn’t actually budge an inch.

“Remember that a study of potions does not preclude the other disciplines of magic.  Try it silently.  The concentration will keep an ill-timed sneeze from interfering.”

Concentrating on the tissue box again, she though, “Accio.”  This time, the box flew easily from the desk to her hand.

“Thank you, Professor.  I knew that, but it’s so hard to concentrate.”

Snape considered the young woman.  In the seven months she’d been his apprentice and assistant, she had given one hundred percent every day.  He knew that if Minerva saw Hermione’s state, he would get a stern lecture.

“Miss Granger, perhaps your immune system has been compromised by the schedule you’ve been keeping.  Take this day to rest and recover.  Drink plenty of fluids and other such restoratives.”

Hermione was stunned that Professor Snape would allow such a concession, and so close to the end of the winter term as well.  She wasn’t surprised when a house elf brought her a tray with mugs of chicken broth and honeyed tea.  When both warm liquids had been consumed, she settled back against her pillows.  Spring allergies had never hit her so hard, but perhaps this was the lingering effect of one of the curses she’d been hit with toward the end of the war.

Or, she thought wryly to herself, I’ve just never worked for such a demanding taskmaster.

***

When she woke, she felt more rested, although her sinuses still felt full and achy.

She wondered if she was at the point where she’d be willing to take one of the general decongestive potions just to see if it would work.  She knew it was always tricky because they did not interact well with each other; so taking the wrong one meant you couldn’t try again for several hours.

She wished Snape would come back so she could ask him.  She hadn’t had the presence of mind this morning.  She wondered if she could somehow Accio the correct potion.

***

Sitting up, she closed her eyes and pictured the Potions classroom where Professor Snape was certainly working at that moment.  She was sure it would disrupt his class if a bottle would go floating out the door that lead to the living quarters.

Flopping back down, she wished very hard that he would just come back and help her out.

A few minutes of sneezing and nose-blowing passed, and she was considering calling for some lunch when Snape again appeared at her door.

“Did you need something, Miss Granger?”

Perhaps there was more to silent summoning than she’d originally thought.
