“No more,” he had said for decades, looking up at the carved figure on the staffroom clock. The effigy of the old man never answered, and yet Severus still lived with his pains and sorrows as time went on.
And then his end had come and gone and he was still here.
Then along came her: he stopped asking.
This year, as the chimes began for the midnight stroke his eyes found that little figure. His arms tightened about Hermione's waist and he mouthed the words: “Many more.”
The clock struck and he swore that Father Time nodded, smiling.
