Wasn't it strange to think that he wasn't the monster. But no, here he was, cobbling Hermione back together after her third heartbreak - all at the hands of that red-headed imbecile. It took more patience than he'd known he had, stitching her heart with finesse.
Severus held back the words he wanted to say, keeping the bottle away from her and plying her instead with tea. How many more times could he do this, he wondered, sitting on her settee as she lay corpse-like on the cushions, her head in his lap and eyes red-rimmed.
This was killing him.

She drifted through days at their apothecary like a ghost, a pale imitation of herself. Out of concern, Severus would see her home each night, sitting quietly while she stroked her cat. He took away the whiskey and set up monitoring charms to ensure that she was safe.
She was more Inferi than woman at this point, and much as he tried, he couldn't find all of the pieces. The least he could do was give her his. He slowly forced himself to allow her past his guard, knowing how quickly she would reject him if she knew his feelings.

Three months into their changed friendship, he bear it no longer, and lowered his mouth to hers as she sat with her head on his shoulder. It was akin to being struck by lightning: the searing heat took him by surprise.
Hermione froze, then melted like glass, flowing over him to straddle his legs. She moaned, kissing him until they were both breathless and dizzy. She lifted her head and Severus met her eyes. The life, the warmth, he saw there floored him.
He barked a laugh and tunneled his hands in her curls for another kiss. She was back.
