Author's Notes:  I'm a bit chuffed as it's been years since I've attempted to write a sonnet.  Not only did I keep my iambic pentameter and my rhyme pattern, but I even managed to have it be exactly 100 words!  Writing about the symbolism of roses seemed to cry out for poetry, so here's my attempt.

__________

When she discovered he was still alive,
Her yellow rose delivered thoughts of cheer
And many constant wishes he would thrive.
Her friendship brightened days no longer drear.
Appreciation and his gratitude
Were sentiments conveyed with roses pink.
Red roses spoke of hearts with love imbued.
No longer from his feelings did he shrink.
She carried roses white their wedding day
For purity of love as vows were said.
And lavender's enchantment would not stray
While orange passion blossomed in their bed.
In spite of times when sorrow brought them tears,
Their love would grow and bloom throughout the years.

Author's Note #2:  My research into the symbolism of roses revealed the following:  Yellow roses mean friendship, get well, cheer.  Pink is for admiration, appreciation, joyfulness.  Red is of course for love, romance and beauty.  White symbolizes purity, new beginnings or remembrance.  Lavender roses mean enchantment and sometimes love at first sight.  Orange roses symbolize passion and desire.
