She fell to her knees beside him, gathering what she could of his slight body onto her lap and into her arms.
It took him only a hazy moment to realize that he was being held. Groping, he found her hand and grasped it to him, relieved he wouldn't have to face death alone. He turned his dark eyes to her blood and dirt streaked face.
“Forgive...please!” he gasped.
For the first and last time in her life, Hermione was speechless.
Somewhere between her silence and her hesitation, Severus Snape slipped away.
