He threw off his armour of black wool and blacker humour and stretched like a cat, then flopped on the sofa like a lanky teenager, spending his evening in a nest of books, papers, cups and glasses - shoes and socks off, sleeves rolled up, collar undone, smile playing on his lips. When the time came, he led her laughing into the bedroom to show her how well the rest of him could play. And then untroubled sleep took him. She watched his lined face and scarred body and was glad. What need of phantasms when one has lived the nightmare?
