"It needs to simmer for half an hour now."

Severus's voice was muffled, and when Hermione snapped her head up and looked at him, she noticed his eyes were red.

"Severus?" she inquired softly, not sure what was going on. Had he been crying?

"I'm fine," he muttered, sinking into his preferred armchair and hiding behind the Prophet.

Hermione didn't want to push; yet she couldn't help but feel anxious. Severus was a sensitive man, but… He wouldn't cry without reason.

She picked up her book again, trying to focus on the text, but the niggling worry wouldn't go away.



The stew looked rich and exquisite, with an aroma that made Hermione's mouth water. Severus looked extraordinarily pleased with himself as he ladled some onto her plate.

"This is… Oh, this is wonderful!" she exclaimed, after taking a spoonful and savouring the taste. "What's the secret? I mean, I've tried this recipe myself, and the result was-"

"Don't remind me." Severus grimaced.

Hermione pursed her lips. Just because that incident had convinced Severus to take over the cooking…

"So what did you do with it?"

"Two whole onions, very finely chopped. I think the results were worth the pain."
