Parchment rustled as Hermione slept, her head resting heavily on her arms, upper body leaning on a lab table crowded with open books and flickering candles.
On silent paws, Crookshanks weaved, his tail expertly twirling side to side through a corridor of wavering flames, nearly reaching his Hermione when a rough hand unceremoniously swept him to thump to the cold stone floor for the hundredth time in recent years.
Severus approached Hermione, paused, then lifted his head, unclasped his outer robe and draped it over her like a blanket, his hand resting on her back until she settled once more.
