The quietest Professor had been screaming whys all night at her. It was testament to how much Firewhiskey he had drunk that he had not double-checked the vial.
'Why go on, indeed.'
The reasons had been so easy to give: weekly chess with Remus, Slytherin companionship for the recently divorced Lucius, his being a role model to children in the Wizarding world, important potions yet to be invented, her apprenticeship, and their... friendship.
'He hadn’t cared.'
Taking the vial of Dreamless Sleep from his unclenched fist, she prayed he wouldn’t kill her instead when he woke up on Christmas Day.
