Hermione sat on the floor surrounded by boxes from her parent's attic, filled with all the things her mum had saved for her. A newborn picture, a certificate with her little baby footprints, a lock of hair, her first story book. Mementos of her childhood, a recording of milestones in her life: her first Christmas, first tooth, first steps, first day of school, first book report, the list went on and on. Being an only child, her mother had doted on her and preserved all the memories she possibly could, crammed into the boxes of photo albums and scrap books.
That was where Severus found her, arms wrapped around her expanding tummy, her childhood spread out around her, sobbing her heart out.
“Oh, my Sweet. What's wrong, Hermione?” he crooned, as if talking to a child. She allowed him to settle her in his lap. “Tell me.”
“Oh, S... Sev... Severus.” She wailed, burying her face in his chest. “They loved me so much, and how did I repay them? By erasing their memories of me and sending them far, far away! Now I'll never see them again. It's all my fault! I'm a horrible daughter!”
After the war, Hermione had attempted to retrieve her parents to restore their memories but there was no trace of them anywhere. It was as if Wendall and Monica Wilkes had vanished off the face of the Earth.
It had never occurred to Hermione that they wouldn't be exactly where she'd left them. That they might move away, or divorce, or die of natural causes, or accident. But there was no record of divorce or death, not even the sale of their house, it just sat unoccupied. They were nowhere to be found, and she would forever bear the guilt.
Now, expecting their first child , the bits and pieces of her own childhood spread across their floor, she was sure her heart would break. At a time when she should be the happiest of her life, she just couldn't seem to let go of the past.
“It was from love. You were trying to protect them from certain death.”
“We see how well that worked out, don't we.”
“You don't know they are dead. We may find them.”
She knew in her heart that was never going to happen. “Oh Severus, I want my mum!”
Five months later they welcomed the newest member of the Snape family, Leahndra Helene Snape. The Helene was after her grandmum, and Hermione was determined to be as good a mother to Leah as her mum had been to her.
She had just settled the babe down in her cradle when a knock came on the door. Severus called, “You have company, Sweet.”
Hermione smiled, thinking it was their friends come visiting already to see the new baby. Turning, she felt the blood drain from her face, Severus stepped quickly behind her to lend his support. “Mummy? Daddy?”
After hugs, kisses, joy and tears, Hermione finally asked “How is this possible?”
“Magic,” replied Severus. Seeing her scathing look, he rushed to explain. “A group effort, assuredly. I contacted The Order, I reminded them exactly how much they owe you. Lucius and Draco owed me favors also.”
The entire story unfolded. Lucius was able to determine the Grangers disapearance was not related to any Deatheater activity.
The Lovegoods used publishing contacts to research references to the Wilkes disapearance from Austrailia. They learned that there had been a violent murder which was witnessed by one Wendell Wilkes.
Through Kingsley's diplomatic connections around the world, they found that the Wilkes/Grangers had been placed into a Muggle witness protection program and moved to the U.S.
Unable to obtain information on their location, they turned to Draco, who was now a Charms specialist. He developed a strong Tracking spell to find the area where the pair were now living.
Harry and a team of Weasleys had gone in to locate and retrieved the pair. Once returned to England, Poppy, Minerva, and Molly took several days to carefully reverse the complicated memory spells and bring the Grangers completely up to date.
To protect her parents Hermione had downplayed the truth about Voldemort, the wizarding war and the part she played in The Golden Trio; thus they hadn't actually understood the true serverity of the situation or the danger they had been in. Now they understood the extremes she had gone to to protect them and though they were still very upset, they were willing to forgive her actions.
They were just happy to be alive, to have their memories restored, have their beloved daughter back, a new beautiful granddaughter to spoil and a rather snarky but totally devoted son-in-law to boot!
