She never believed his reply whenever she asked about his feelings for her.
He'd said she would hate him for speaking the truth.
She envied Harry and Ginny's ideal relationship. Neither of them were afraid to show their emotions or display their affections.
One day, Hermione finally had her fill of Severus' evasiveness. She dared him to finally be totally honest with her. She knew he'd never back down from a wizard's dare.
So, he thoroughly explained why he couldn't love her.
Now she believes his original response. She couldn't handle Severus' shocking revelations, because they ultimately broke her heart.
