Time to attack. Hermione met Snape’s gaze.
“Why did you even let me see you?” she said. “You’re a better spy than that.”
As she closed in on him, his gaze flickered and slid away from hers. “Don’t,” he whispered.
“Don’t . . . what?”
When she sat down in the empty seat beside him, he pulled back as if scalded, wrapping black-sleeved arms around his chest. And then she understood: Severus Snape had no magic. He was burnt out, impotent, unable to defend himself against anyone who could wield a wand.
In other words, he was at her mercy.

At her mercy. An astonishing thought. She-whom Snape had belittled and terrorized for years despite all efforts to prove herself-could do whatever she bloody well liked to the ex-Potions master. Not hurt him-no. That wasn’t in her nature. But humble him. Perhaps even humiliate him a little.
The idea should have filled her with righteous satisfaction. Yes, Snape had been cleared posthumously of murder and treason, but he’d shown no virtues. Nothing but loyalty to his own precious self . . . and a wide streak of nastiness.
Her fingers tightened around her wand.
“Please,” Snape whispered.
