My foolish student seems to have disappeared from the city.

[Mukuro's voice is calm and dispassionate, but anyone who knows him well - of which there are few - might be able to detect annoyance or anger beneath his words.]I have been unable to contact Fran through my PCD or in any other way. I assume this means he's left ( Read more... )

[In listening to the message, Juliet forgets for a moment what Fran has told her about his master. She is far more concerned with her friend's absence.]

Fran - Fran is gone as well? No, he cannot be....

He is. Perhaps he'll come back - I certainly hope he does. [He sighs.] You're a friend of his?

Too many leaving so suddenly....

[Said almost to herself. It seemed everyone for whom she cared was being taken away, one by one. And then she remembers the feed and nods, addressing the gentleman again.]

Yes. He is one of the few with whom I can converse in my native tongue here.

[He raises an eyebrow, distracted from the Fran issue for a moment.]

Your native tongue? Are you French, then?

No, Veronese. The dialect of Italian is different, but we can understand each other when we converse.

Fran knows French as well? He is very learned.

Fran is French by birth. [A smile, and he switches easily into modern Italian, speaking with the skill of a native.] I, however, am Italian. How nice to meet a countrywoman.

Is he? I was not aware. We have always spoken of Italy with similar fondness.

[The modern Italian is a delight to hear, even if it takes a bit of concentration to understand. She answers in her native Veronese.]

Indeed, it is always good to meet someone else from home. From which part of the peninsula do you hail, good sir?

He's spent quite a bit of time there, of course.

[Though Mukuro would never admit it, it's quite pleasant for him as well. He rarely gets a chance to speak his own language these days.]

I'm originally from Sicily. Quite a bit more southern than you, if you are from Verona.

Sicily! That is indeed very far south of us. We occasionally see merchants from Sicily, and they say it is a beautiful island. Have you visited the peninsula, good sir?

I've visited a great many places. Sicily is beautiful, I suppose, but I don't have much of an emotional attachment. Have you traveled outside of Verona at all?

I have not. Father has not taken any of the ladies of the house on his trips, not even my lady Mother. I - I may be traveling soon, though, when I return home, although I know not exactly where.

And have you been to our fair Verona?

Briefly, yes. Certainly not long enough to truly enjoy the city, but I find myself busy rather often.

Why will you travel when you return home?

I only hope the city showed itself well when you visited, good sir. The gentlemen sometimes forget to act as such.

[She hesitates at this, but decides that the telling is harmless enough.]

My husband has been exiled from the city by the Prince. I - I will likely find a way to go with him, if I cannot find a way to convince my liege that he should be allowed to stay.

It was pleasant enough. I didn't stay long, perhaps I'll have to find a reason to return.

[A brief pause as he takes that in.]

The Prince? Ah, I think you must be from a rather different Italy than myself. Nevertheless, I wish you luck when you return.

I am from Verona in the fifteenth century, good sir. It is likely very different to your Verona, if you come from a time beyond my own.

[She curtsies.]

I thank you for your kind wishes.

Yes, I come from quite a distance in the future. Still, it's nice to have met you - what was your name?
