Player Characters - My Top 3 - 4 years on

May 31, 2013 10:03

As with my top 3 RPGs, I also did a series of my top 3 PCs. I have had quite a bit of playing experience in the last few years, given I am normally a GM. And I find myself enjoying the PC perspective more and more as I become better able to craft my PC in a way to suit my needs, using my GMing skills to push as much from the PC as I can.

In any case, a lot has happened since I made that series of posts, being:

1st - Jacobi Silverhart: http://grandexperiment.livejournal.com/32399.html
2nd - Kemp Swivenfoot: http://grandexperiment.livejournal.com/32019.html
3rd - Shyla Moran: http://grandexperiment.livejournal.com/31938.html

The biggest change is that the I played through all of Jacobi's story in Red Sun, and he died at the end. It was a suitable ending for the PC, but mostly because I had come to realise that I crafted him in a way that meant he could not fulfil the hopes I had for him. As such, it was a way for me to finish his story with some satisfaction and re-examine my approach to PCs.

I managed to put that re-examination to the test with Adona, my Dragon Blooded PC described here: http://grandexperiment.livejournal.com/175027.html. I also brought in elements of Shyla Moran. She has proved much more satisfying in play, as the latest Exalted Actual Play should attest to. Effectively, she has the tragedy and depth of Jacobi but with Shyla's room to move. I have also used Shyla's PbP setup which saw me use elements that were in my control more heavily in the PC's story. It is also a better PC for Sam in terms of the relationship with her PC and the group at large. I have also had a chance to establish an Adona that the other PCs feel a connection too and like, before getting on to the darker and compelling bits.

In any case, Adona is now my number 1 PC and she still has plenty of "life" ahead of her. In fact, unlike Jack, who seemed only in a spiral to darkness and sorrow, Adona has light of some kind at the end of the tunnel. Her story is very much about growing up, so she will change and this provides for her story to refresh and remain interesting too. This season's APs should contain lots of cool stuff regarding Adona.

What does this mean for the rest of the top 3 spots? Well I think the fact that Adona has drawn on the energy of Jacobi and Shyla means that it is not simply a case of the other PCs dropping a spot. I think Kemp would remain in 2nd place and Jack would drop to 3rd. Strangely enough, despite his death Exalted 3e may actually provide a way of continuing Jack's story through the new Liminal Exalted, and I like the PC to put some effort to revisiting him (for a 3rd time :)). Shyla was great but limited in her life, and I feel like she has almost entirely been subsumed by the spirit of Adona.
